South Platte Sentinel Weighs in on Amendment 73
From the South Platte Sentinel Editorial:
Get informed on November ballot initiatives
Should Colorado schools get more funding? That is just one of the issues Colorado voters will have the opportunity to weigh in on in the November election.
While it may seem like the election is a ways off right now, ballots will be in the mail in just two short months. We encourage you to take the time now to get informed about the issues you will be voting on.
Supporters of the Great Schools, Thriving Communities initiative, or Amendment 73, plan to distribute flyers and will be hosting public information meetings to get the word out about the amendment, which would raise $1.6 million for Colorado schools by raising taxes for those who make more than $150,000 and increase taxes taxes on Colorado corporations.
Also on the ballot, a bond measure to finance improvements to the city of Sterling wastewater treatment system. In recent months the city of Sterling has sent out several fliers with monthly water bills to explain the need for improvements, as the city is now non-compliant with its existing discharge permit and failure to move forward with upgrades could result in stiff penalties from the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, to the tune of $10,000 a day assessed from the first date of the violation last November.
Additionally, Logan County voters will have the opportunity to weigh in on extending term limits for the 13th Judicial District Attorney and whether the county should be able to continue to collect a 0.5 percent sales tax, which had been used to pay for the Justice Center and could be used to pay for the maintenance of other county properties.
We encouraged voters to take the time to be informed about what you’re voting on and attend any informational meetings that may be held in the coming months. Senator Jerry Sonnenberg is scheduled to give his annual presentation on ballot initiatives on Thursday, Oct. 11, at the Logan County Republican Headquarters, 1602 Highway 6, a good time to learn about all the issues at one time.
Your vote counts, be informed!
